'Modelling the world of waste waters' with WEST®

In early May DHI had the pleasure to announce that 'WEST becomes MIKE by DHI'. With this new member of the software family, a new dimension has been added to 'Modelling the world of water' by introduction of a model for water processing.

WEST® is a world renowned, dynamic modelling and simulation system for wastewater treatment plants, and is used for design, optimisation and operation of WWTPs, including integrated wastewater management.

WEST® is now fully integrated in DHI's professional software development: source code management, planning, implementation, testing, bug fixing and documentation. The key developers of WEST®, who are now DHI staff, are close to completing WEST 2011 scheduled for release in November.

The existing WEST® version has an extensive process library allowing users to model and evaluate almost any kind of modern wastewater treatment plant. The coming version will further cement its position as a state-of-the-art model, both technically and with regard to usability and simulation runtime.

WEST® 2011includes significant new features and improvements, for example:

  • Faster and more user-friendly interactive layout editing
  • asy start for newcomers – full flexibility for experts
  • New model editor providing:
    • Syntax-aware MSL model editing
    • Gujer matrix editing
    • Model library browser
  • 5 new advanced model analysis features:
    • Uncertainty Analysis
    • Scenario Analysis
    • Local Sensitivity Analysis
    • Global Sensitivity Analysis
    • Parameter Estimation
  • Fastest WWTP simulation engine ever

Tips & Hints

MIKE 21/3 FM: Morphological hotstart

A new functionality was introduced in the MIKE 21/3 Flexible Mesh Series models 2011 release enabling the dynamic update of a model bathymetry during a simulation (the feature works on element based topography; i.e. dfsu files). Please note that it is not part of the official 2011 release as the related GUI is not yet available. If you want to try it out please read more here

In the example below, the new MIKE 21/3 Dynamic Bathymetry Update feature has been used to evaluate a potential risk for a breach through an alongshore dune.

Application Examples

Improving bypass and increasing navigation depth

One of the very satisfying moments as coastal engineering consultant is when the client, or society affected by a new development, shows excitement with the results acheived. For example, designing and construting a fishery harbour that effectively protects the fishermen's investments in vessels and fishing gear and at the same time ensure a safe approach to the harbour.

A case example of innovative harbour design is Hvide Sande Harbour in Denmark,. In this study the MIKE 21 FM Coupled Model for morphological modelling was applied using a quasi three-dimensional (Q3D) hydrodynamic model in the formulation of the sediment transport equations. The progress in modelling sophistication of hydrodynamic and sediment transport processes, combined with increased computational power and code optimization (parallelization techniques in FM series), has made morphodynamics process-based models increasingly valuable tools for coastal engineers and managers. Improving system optimization for wastewater utility

The Racine Wastewater Utility provides wasterwater collection and treatment to 10 communities in the greater Racince area located in southeastern Wisconsin, US. Read more about how the MIKE URBAN Collection System model and optimization critera were applied to meet future demand here

“The use of the Mike Urban model provided a solution for the Racine Wastewater Commission Technical Advisory Committee or TAC that validated how the sewer system functioned under surcharged conditions. Validating the model with time sensitive elevations from a real event also made the calibration of the model more believable for the local participating sewer service parties of Racine. The model is far superior than the previous model that was used more than a decade ago. Results of the modeling effort will provide the cornerstone of future regional sewer system projects and will help to accurately assign costs to parties of a local sewer agreement in a fair, equitable and defendable manner. MIKE URBAN provided a robust package of options for our consultant AECOM to draw upon as they tested several solutions to optimize the system. Now that the model is constructed it will be a valuable tool for years to come as other issues arise.”

Keith Haas, City of Racine, Wastewater Utility

Improving preventive flood protection

The River Stör Flood modeling project, Gemany

To simulate the time dependent complex interactions between flood propagation, tidal influence and the effects of control structures, all existing models were integrated into one large fully coupled model system using MIKE FLOOD.

Although portions of the River Stör and its tributaries have been modelled in the past, a comprehensive model of the catchment had not previously been developed that addressed the full complexity of the catchment. MIKE FLOOD was found to be an excellent tool for modelling the interactions between storm surges, hydraulic structures and pumping, and storm water runoff.

Golder’s previous modelling experience in this river system coupled with the flexibility of MIKE Flood was able to address the key factors affecting water levels in the catchment. The flood risk and inundation maps produced for this project will be made public by the Ministry according to the legal directives to improve preventive flood protection and flood awareness. What the users says

"Norconsult AS started to use MIKEFLOOD for dam break analysis in 2008 and we are very satisfied with the software. We are a group of 6 professional engineers that uses Mikesoftware on a regular basis for dam break and flood mapping. Both Mike 11 and Mike 21 are user friendly software packages so it is easy to get up to speed. We have also had a course in MIKEFLOOD that was very useful. The numerical engine seems to be more stable that other software packages we have used. This ensure that time not are wasted on getting the model to run. Instead struggling with numerical instabilities we can run sensitive analysis and ensure that we deliver correct solutions on time. We can recommend the MIKEFLOOD package that includes Mike 11 and Mike 21."

Leif Basberg, Norconsult AS, Norway.

"To us there’s no choice. We have invested a lot into DHI software and friendships too! You guys are very good at getting us on our feet when we stumble with our projects."

Nazeer Gopaul, Director, CoastalDynamics Limited, Trinidad and Tobago

“Florida International University, in collaboration with DHI, and with funding from the National Park Service, has developed an integrated surface and groundwater model for the Everglades National Park using MIKE SHE and MIKE 11. The model includes a domain of 1000 square miles and 110 miles of canals with multiple control structures and complex operation schedules. Throughout the project, DHI’s R&D group has provided excellent and timely support for model setup, construction, calibration and optimization. The model has been enthusiastically received by the client and will be a critical tool for evaluation of Everglades restoration projects.”

Georgio Tachiev, Ph.D. P.E., Principal Investigator, Applied Research Center, Florida International University, Miami, FL

"Here at WAVCIS Lab of Coastal Studies Institute, Louisiana State University, we have been working with MIKE 21/3 model suite since early 2006. Over these years many of our researchers and graduate students took advantage of these cutting edge models to resolve the complex hydrodynamic and sediment transport problems pertaining to their research projects. Numerous articles have been published in peer reviewed journals and specialty conference proceedings. Over these years, the tremendous technical support provided by DHI North America was beyond our expectation! We wouldn’t have resolved many of our modeling issues, if it were not for the prompt support offered by the DHI people. We are glad that we have built a strong relationship with DHI and looking forward to foster this collaboration."

Felix Jose, Ph.D, research associate, Coastal Studies Institute, Louisiana State University
