Researching the Grand-Lieu Lake in France with MIKE 21

The Science University of Nantes is using MIKE 21 software for ecosystems research of the Grand-Lieu Lake in France. The natural area of the Grand-Lieu Lake is well protected, but suffers an alarming evolution including phenomena such as fast erosion of the macrophytes belt, significantly decreasing biodiversity, early blooming of cyanobacteria phytoplankton, and negative sedimentary balance.

The aim of the project is to provide a scientific assessment on the water quality and eutrophication risk of the lake as well as on the hydrosedimentary evolution of the lake on a short as well as long term basis. In order to do this, the project includes the development of a decision support numerical tool using MIKE 21 software, and the results of the simulations will allow stakeholders to anticipate the effects of the manipulation of this environment on the abiotic function of the lake as well as the evolution of current ecosystems.

DHI guidelines on climate change adaptation

Climate change is the topic of much discussion and is an increasing challenge worldwide, but are you and your organisation prepared to handle the effects of climate change?

Climate change will first and foremost hit us through water, which creates a continuously increasing demand for ways to manage the effects of extreme weather and to develop preventive solutions.

DHI has more than 45 years of experience with climate change adaptation. This expertise and extensive knowledge has been compiled into three climate change adaptation guidelines, which provide detailed methodologies on how to achieve sustainable climate change adaptation within areas of Water Resources, Urban, and Marine.

“Through this initiative, it is our wish to increase DHI’s contribution to a sustainable climate change adaptation of societies,” says Jacob Høst-Madsen, Consultancy Director, DHI.

The climate change adaptation guidelines are available here for download free of charge.

For more information about the three guidelines, click here.

Climate change incorporated in MIKE by DHI software

Another DHI initiative within this area is the incorporation of climate change into the MIKE software. In Release 2011, MIKE by DHI introduced the Climate Change Tool, which can provide water modellers with fast and consistent answers to climate change questions. Below you will find news about upcoming improvements of this tool in the upcoming 2012 release.

Product News

Previews of MIKE by DHI Release

As in previous issues of our newsletter, we would like to disclose a preview of the upcoming MIKE by DHI software package 2012, which is scheduled to be released this September. The release will contain various new and exciting features, which we hope will improve your experience when using the software products, both with regard to usability, productivity, and enhanced applications.

Climate Change Tool: Sea Level Rise included

Click on the figure to enlarge.

One of the interesting news in version 2012 of the Climate Change Tool is that Sea Level Rise scenarios are now included. The Climate Change Tool works on existing model setups and modifies the boundary conditions according to a chosen forecast (Global Circulation Model and Emission Scenario) and forecast year.

The changes in sea level are obviously of crucial interest for a number of applications, for example related to coastal defence works. In version 2012 of the tool, global mean sea level change is included as assessed in the IPCC Assessment Report No 4 and in three posterior estimations, in all cases for three different emission scenarios.

In order to evoke the Sea Level Rise changes, the user has to define:

  • Selected sea level rise model (including choice of lower, mean or upper level)
  • Projection year
  • Emission scenario

FEFLOW 6.1: Watching the calibration quality

Click on the image to enlarge.

Another new feature concerns the calibration quality in FEFLOW 6.1. The calibration process is one of the most important and often most elaborate working steps when modelling groundwater systems. Having an easy and prompt response of the match between field data and computed values significantly reduces effort.

In FEFLOW 6.1, in-line visualisation of the local calibration quality at observation points assists the user during the calibration process (see figure). The deviation from the calibration target is depicted as an error bar where different colours accentuate possible violation of confidence intervals. Scatter plots finally summarise the overall match between measured and computed values.

For more information, please contact Alexander Renz, DHI-Wasy, Germany.

FEFLOW 6.1: First presentation to a public audience

FEFLOW seminars

In May 2012, a preview of FEFLOW 6.1 was presented to a public audience for the first time. More than 70 FEFLOW users from Austria, Switzerland, and Germany joined a series of local seminars, where the FEFLOW Services Team presented new modelling approaches and provided tips on how to work effectively with the new user interface. Participants also took the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with FEFLOW users from their areas. We thank all participants for taking part in the presentations and discussions.

FEFLOW 6.1 will be released this summer. For the first time, all modelling features will be accessible by a single, state-of-the-art user interface.

Successful event on storm water management with Hungarian Engineering Chamber

Hungarian event

Hungarian event

On 25 April, DHI Hungary had organised a joint, all day full-house event together with the Hungarian Engineering Chamber on storm water management in cities. The seminar had over 100 registered participants and took place in Gyor, hosted in the local Water Directorate building.

Presentations were given by representatives of Engineering Chamber on problems regarding storm water management in urban areas, including climate change impacts and long term planning of city development and sustainable operations. DHI staff provided good examples of realised projects, executed using MIKE URBAN software, in Central – Eastern Europe, and paved the way for knowledge sharing among the participants.

Furthermore, DHI has developed a guideline for municipalities on integrated storm water management: `How to deal with problems of urban flooding issues` (in Hungarian), which is available free of charge on request.

Due to the very high level of interest, the seminar will be repeated in Hungary in the second half of 2012.

For more information, please click here or contact Zsuzsanna Nagy, DHI Hungary.
