A licence for every need
|
|
With the introduction of MIKE LICENSING FLEX ACCESS, presented in the previous issue, one general licence model is, for the first time, applied to all MIKE by DHI software products. The portfolio of Corporate licence, Subscription licence and Personal licence provides a flexible and perfectly fitting range of licences for all types of software users. Inherent in the new licence model is also the possibility of several features that can enhance your workflow significantly, such as rental of additional copies, access to worldwide software training, Cloud Licences, High Performance Computing and Remote Simulations. Check out www.mikebydhi.com/licence or contact your local DHI office for more information. | For information about licence types specifically for FEFLOW, please read more on www.feflow.com. Also, you can now download the updated FEFLOW version (FEFLOW 6.105) and licence manager software (NetLM 4.5) from www.feflow.com/download.html to gain access to the new functionalities immediately. |

Free download: Topography Adjustment Tool The Topography Adjustment Tool is a MIKE by DHI software custom user tool developed for the purpose of automating the process of using polygon shape files to adjust topography values in dfs2 files used in MIKE 21 surface water flow models. The main application of the tool is to use a polygon shape file of buildings to automatically assign land values to the dfs2 grid cells which are intersecting the building polygons. However, the tool has been designed such that it can also be used to ‘burn’ roadways into the topography. In fact, although the tool is primarily intended for adjusting topography, it can be used to adjust any dfs2 file using a polygon shape file to select the grid cells of interest. The Topography Adjustment Tool was developed to work with the 2012 Release format of dfs2 files but it is expected it will work with some earlier versions of dfs2 files and will continue to work for future releases as long as major changes are not made to the structure and content of dfs2 files. Click here to download the Topography Adjustment Tool. |

Improved version of Global Tide Model now available
|
|
An improved version of the Global Tide Model for coastal and marine modelling is available in 0.125 degree resolution. The model is updated with additional four years of radar satellite measurement and two additional constituents has been added providing better predictions in shallow water. The updated model includes the following 10 constituents:
Semidiurnal: |
M2, S2, K2, N2 |
Diurnal: |
S1, K1, O1, P1, Q1 |
Shallow water: |
M4 | | The data can conveniently be copied to the default folder for tidal constituents (e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\DHI\2012\MIKE Zero\Application Data\Tide Constituents). The Global Tide Model is developed by DTU Space in collaboration with DHI. Click here to download the model constituents for free. |

The use of 3D numerical modelling in groundwater research and water quality risk assessment in Canada Matrix Solutions Inc. is using MIKE by DHI numerical modelling for ground-breaking research and valuable solutions for their clients. Two examples are: Feasibility study estimating lithium and potash rich brine deposit reserves Matrix Solutions developed a 3D numerical modelling tool using among others FEFLOW to represent the complex groundwater flow system and evaluate various wellfield strategies. Using FEFLOW to develop their numerical model, Matrix Solutions was able to significantly reduce simulation time and reach a conclusion supporting a long time and low cost mining operation. The importance of groundwater–surface water interaction in water resource assessments In order to better understand and assess the groundwater –surface water interaction, Matrix Solutions applied our integrated modelling software MIKE SHE to two municipal water quality risk assessments in order to evaluate the sustainability of municipal water withdrawals. Tips & tricks |
Streamlines/pathlines plot in cross section views in FEFLOW |
|
Step 1: Open a cross section view in which you would like to show pathlines or streamlines. Step 2: In the spatial-units panel, click on the node selection (current node selection or a stored selection) that you would like to use as starting location for the streamlines/pathlines. Step 3: In the data panel, double click on streamlines/pathlines -> forward/backward. Step 4: Start the traces or period sections plot with the respective check boxes in the view components panel. Have you worked out your own way of achieving something otherwise impossible in FEFLOW? Send an email to FEFLOW support team. You can find more useful tips and tricks for MIKE by DHI software here or check out our FAQ, which has been updated with Release 2012 information. |

Two workshops on ’computer modeling tools for coastal and marine projects’ in Saudi Arabia
|
|
On 9-11 December 2012, DHI, in collaboration with SNC Lavalin Fayez Engineering (SLFE), organised two workshops on computer modelling tools for coastal and marine projects. The workshops were held in Al Khobar and Jeddah respectively. Amongst other issues, the workshops contained introductions to DHI’s marine software packages MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 and presentations of examples of the application of these. The seminars were attended by approximately 25 participants each, with representatives from Saudi Arabian governmental bodies, universities and engineering companies. Issues regarding hydrodynamics, coastal engineering and environmental engineering were of great interest and lively, interesting discussions became part of the workshops. Principal interventions were undertaken by Bassan Eid and ZongYan Yang from SLFE and Muaweih Radaideh and Poul Kronborg from DHI. | |

MIKE 11 training course for national institutes in Nile region In December 2012, 13 members of national research institutes from Egypt and Sudan attended a five-day training course, which was held at the training centre of the Ministry of Irrigation & Water Resources, in Cairo region, Egypt. Some concerns of these institutes are management of dams and sedimentation in reservoirs. This MIKE 11 course dealt with hydrodynamic modelling with a special focus on dam modelling (dam breaks, dam regulations). A MIKE 21 C training course is also in the pipeline for these institutes and will focus especially on sedimentation in reservoirs. |
