Comprehensive FEFLOW book published by Springer

FEFLOW book published

The comprehensive book, FEFLOW - Finite Element Modeling of Flow, Mass and Heat Transport in Porous and Fractured Media, written by H.J. G. Diersch is now published by Springer.

It is a theoretical textbook, wich covers a wide range of physical and computational issues in the field of porous/fractured media modelling. The book is general and will be useful for both students and practitioners in engineering and geosciences as well as in other fields where porous media flow dynamics and computational methods are of specific concern.

Helping Botswana protect the Okavango Delta wetland system

Case story

Click here to read the full case story.

We developed a comprehensive integrated model complex to support the Okavango Delta Management Plan (ODMP), developed by the Botswana government. The 6,000 km² Okavango Delta is vital to the ecology, economy and culture of Botswana. The government needed a thorough understanding of the region’s wetland hydrology. We developed a dynamic, integrated wetland model based on our MIKE SHE and MIKE 11 software. The scenario outputs of the hydrological model, combined with our consultation services, provided results, which were successfully applied to an effective management and protection plan for the delta. They also formed the basis for Okavango River Basin Water Commission (OKACOM) talks on water resources management and the future of the Okavango Delta.

Assessing riverbank and coastal erosion processes in Mozambique

Case story

Click here to read the full case story.

We helped NIRAS provide the Government of Mozambique with a detailed coastal analysis of the Macaneta Peninsula, with the support of the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA). The Macaneta Peninsula protects the Lower Incomati Estuary in Mozambique from the Indian Ocean. In recent years, riverbank erosion has caused concern that the river could break through a narrow isthmus, threatening fishing and agriculture industries in the area. We worked with NIRAS to perform a detailed coastal erosion study of the Macaneta Peninsula using MIKE 21 SW and the LITDRIFT module of LITPACK. Our analysis showed that the dynamics of the river and the sea seem to have reached a balanced state that maintains the isthmus.

Improving water management in North India

Case story

Click here to read the full case story.

We developed a Real-Time Decision Support System (RTDSS) for the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) in Northern India. BBMB needed a solution to address a multidimensional problem, including flooding during monsoons and loss of water collection due to inefficient reservoir operations. We developed a RTDSS, which is built on our MIKE CUSTOMISED platform and using MIKE 11 and MIKE BASIN software. Our RTDSS enables BBMB to improve flood management, leading to minimised loss of life and property for those living along the rivers. It can also help authorities optimise power generation, encouraging overall development in the region.

THE ACADEMY by DHI joins forces with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU)

DTU Master course

THE ACADEMY by DHI conducted a three-week international Master’s course on Coastal and Marine Modelling in January 2014. It was carried out in collaboration with the Mechanical Engineering Department of DTU. The course comprised the modelling of Metocean conditions as well as flooding and coastal processes and resulted in a number of real-life projects on coastal problems. The MIKE 21 modelling package was applied. Click here to read more.

MIKE FLOOD training for the National Water Commission of Mexico

MIKE FLOOD training, Mexico

From 2-13 December 2013, thirteen participants from the National Water Commission of Mexico, CONAGUA, gathered in Mexico City for a two-week MIKE FLOOD training course provided by DHI at our agent in Mexico, SIGSA’s, training facilities. Participants included staff from the Mexican Institute of Water Technology, IMTA, who received training in the use of MIKE FLOOD Flexible Mesh for river and coastal flooding applications. CONAGUA will be using the software in connection with studies of flood hazard risk maps for the National Flood Risk Atlas. Click here to read more.

MIKE 21 and LITPACK training course for INOCAR in Ecuador

MIKE 21 and LITPACK training in Ecuador

Fifteen employees from the Ecuadorian Navy’s Oceanographic Institute, INOCAR, gathered in Guayaquil in Ecuador in Autumn 2013 for a one week MIKE 21 and LITPACK training course. Participants included military and civilian personnel from INOCAR, who received training in the use of MIKE 21 Mesh Generator and Spectral Wave FM module as well as on all five LITPACK modules. The participants will be using the software to process and store hydrographic data, such as water levels and wave data, collected by INOCAR on a regular basis, as well as to study wave and sediment transport processes along the coasts of Ecuador.

Training news from DHI China

When it comes to training activities, last year was, beyond a doubt, a great year for DHI China. With the endeavours of the entire DHI China, we completed a series of successful training courses, which inspired positive feedback and included a wide coverage of clients and enrolments exceeding one thousand participants.

The year 2014 is a new year - a new start. In late March, we will hold the first important public training course in Shanghai, which is a MIKE 21/3 thematic course. The training course will be separated into four topics tailored to the different needs of clients. We keep the traditional topics, such as water quality and ecological modelling, oil spill modelling and wave study and include new highlights, such as agent based modelling, river hydraulics and morphology studies with MIKE 21C. In the wake of the MIKE 21/3 thematic course, FEFLOW Advanced training will be held in Chengdu in late April.
