Flood forecasting system in the Biala Tarnowska river in Poland

At DHI Poland, we have been awarded a contract for the development of a flood forecasting system in the Biała Tarnowska river catchment. The system will be used to monitor the meteorological and hydrological conditions and issue flood warnings for the local administration units, crisis prevention teams and the general public. During the massive flood in 2010, the large city, Tarnów, and several smaller municipalities along the river suffered. With the new flood forecasting system, they will benefit from the early warnings.

At this stage, the system will be based on accessible online data, mainly from meteorological models and water level gauges. However, in the future it is planned to be extended by additional monitoring stations including rain gauges and possibly a local weather radar. MIKE Customised will be used to develop the system and to make the best use of online hydrological and hydraulic models developed in MIKE 11. This will be the first operational system of this type introduced in Poland.

For more information about MIKE 11 or flood forecasting systems, please go to www.mikebydhi.com or www.dhigroup.com.

FEFLOW recommended in Chile

FEFLOW in Chile

In the new guidelines for groundwater model application for EIA in Chile, FEFLOW has been especially recommended for applications including:

  • flow under unsaturated conditions
  • density-dependent flow
  • flow in fractured and karstic media
  • transport under unsaturated conditions

The guidelines were jointly published by the Ministry of Environment, the EIA Authority and the General Directorate of Water (Ministry of Public Works).

With the new guidelines, FEFLOW users working in Chile can be sure that they are using well-accepted software for their projects. The guidelines are available (in Spanish) here.

Application examples

Optimising oyster aquaculture in Qualidia Lagoon in Morocco

MIKE by DHI case story

The Qualidia Lagoon, located on the Atlantic shores of Morocco, is a shallow 10 km long tidal estuary and the home to oyster aquaculture production. The area experienced insufficient water renewal in the upstream section of the lagoon and as a consequence increasingly poor water quality. This caused the oyster aquaculture production to suffer. Hydrosoft S.A. was contracted to examine possible water renewal strategies for the lagoon. They investigated two possible remediation strategies:

  • removing an upstream dike separating salt ponds from the rest of the lagoon
  • regular dredging to increase the depth of water circulation channels within the sandy flood delta at the downstream end of the lagoon

They chose to apply MIKE by DHI hydrodynamic modelling software, which enabled them to reach the conclusion of removing the upstream dike and thus improving the aquaculture environment.

Events

Upcoming events

Throughout the year, we arrange many interesting events for users around the world through The Academy by DHI. Below is a selection of upcoming events. For more information about our events, please consult the Global Events Calendar. Here, you will always find the latest updates about our user group meetings, seminars and workshops.

DHI Academy Day in Moscow

DHI Academy Day in Moscow, Russia
16 April 2013

Volga, DHI’s agent in Russia, invites Russian speaking users and professionals interested in DHI´s technologies, software features and training activities to join 'A DHI Academy Day'. The Academy Day will include a blend of presentations of the new MIKE by DHI software features of Release 2012, introduction to the MIKE Customised products, case studies presented by Russian users and Volga experts and one specialised workshop: 'Modelling and Monitoring for Rehabilitation and Master Planning of Urban Water Systems'.

The training course 'MU WD - Introduction to Modelling of Urban Water Distribution Systems' is arranged in conjunction with the DHI Academy Day (17-18 April).

For more information, please contact Michael Galant, Director, Volga, DHI agent in Russia.

User group meeting

16th DHI User Conference in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan
28 and 30 May 2013

This year, the 16th DHI User Conference - Japan DUC - will be celebrated in two cities: Tokyo and Osaka. The aim of the DUCs is to bring together the Japanese user community and all interested modellers. A number of important key note speakers from the Japanese community of modellers and users will introduce various aspects and applications of the MIKE by DHI software. The DUC will be presented in Japanese as well as English with Japanese translation.

For more information, please contact Francois Salesse, Customer Care Unit, DHI Japan.

User Group Meeting

FEFLOW 'Down Under' User Group Meeting 2013
19-21 June 2013

The 2nd Australian and New Zealand FEFLOW User Group Meeting will be held in Adelaide. The event will be a joint event with National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT), which reinforces the DHI-NCGRT partnership. The workshop will consist of two days of presentations. This will include keynotes from leading industry speakers as well as the FEFLOW 6.1 development team, highlighting the new capabilities of FEFLOW 6.1 and explaining future development directions.

An additional training day will give both beginners and experienced users the possibility to explore our groundwater modelling software more in detail. This includes an introduction to FEFLOW and MIKE SHE, using FEFLOW with PEST and the usage of FEFLOW according to the groundwater modelling guidelines.

The Academy by DHI in Mexico and Costa Rica

On 20 February 2013, about a hundred people gathered at the Hotel Fiesta Inn, Mexico City, for the 2nd DHI seminar and MIKE by DHI User Group Meeting. The event included five local user presentations that perfectly displayed the relevance and applicability of the MIKE by DHI water simulation tools to address local water issues. The participants represented a broad spectrum of institutions and companies from the Mexican water sector and the event was concluded successfully. The following week, a similar DHI seminar on ‘Software and solutions for water environments’ was held at the Hotel Palma Real in San José, Costa Rica. This was the first of its kind in Costa Rica and was very well received.

FEFLOW training for government agencies in Chile

FEFLOW training in Chile

On 12-15 March, numerous staff members of the water agency (DGA), the environmental agency (SEA) and the geological survey (SERNAGEOMIN) of Chile used the opportunity to get to know FEFLOW in detail. The topics ranged from general model setup to specific fields such as:

  • density-dependent flow
  • unsaturated flow
  • groundwater in complex geological settings
  • head-dependent evaporation

A significant portion of the topics were closely related to groundwater in mining. We would like to thank all participants for a fruitful week. Special thanks go to Robin Dufour (MWH) and Javier Gonzalez (Golder) for their support in training preparation and conduction.

We co-sponsored a course on marine metocean data modelling and analysis for DTU in Denmark

In January, we organised a high level training course for students from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and University of Copenhagen. As part of the Master's course, the students learned how to use our MIKE by DHI modelling software for offshore and coastal projects and prepared them for the offshore and coastal engineering challenges of tomorrow.

“The DHI master class has clearly increased the awareness of the importance of coastal engineering to our students,” said Jacob Hjelmager, Associate Professor at DTU.

Students taking part in the course on our premises in Hørsholm came from several countries, including Denmark, Austria, Lebanon, Egypt and Sweden. The course was an integral part of the research project ‘Marine structures for the future’.
